Strand 2 - Should we rely more on not-for-profit organisations and which types of services should the Council be using not for profit organisations for? [Topic now closed]

We currently spend £26m each year to support community groups, social enterprise and charities. They provide a huge range of public services, drawing on volunteer time and accessing funding from other sources. Where these organisations can provide services more efficiently and effectively than the Council, should we route more services through community groups or community businesses? If you think so, which areas should we focus on and what support would be needed?

Use of not for profit organisations

Yes, I do believe that more service delivery should be placed with community businesses. As to which services, that should be decided by the 'market' i.e. by the community organisations themselves provided they can meet the supplier requirements.
An extra point - I don't believe that the term 'not-for profit' should be used nor should services be placed solely with -not-for-profit organisations. The pressure of making a profit is a vital motivation to achieving high productivity and should be in fair competition with the 'for profit' sector in order to drive up quality of service delivery. I do believe, however, that community enterprises that return profit to the organisation and not to shareholders should be encouraged and indeed should be able to keep lower costs.
