Nairn River Community Council is calling on all Nairn Post Office customers and residents of Nairn to show support for the Nairn Harbour Street Post Office in a number of ways.
• Post a positive comment on this web site.
• Write a letter of support for Nairn Harbour Street Post Office to Sally Buchanan at Post Office Ltd (No stamp required). Ideas for your letter are set out below.
• Write a letter to your MP.
• Continue to use the Nairn Harbour Street Post Office. A special show of customer support has been arranged for 1100 on Saturday 9th February 2008. Everyone is invited to meet at the Nairn Court House at 1030 on Saturday 9th February.
Some of the reasons for not closing the Nairn Harbour Street Post Office are listed here. Please post your reasons for not closing the Nairn Harbour Street Post Office on this Forum.
Negative Impacts
The proposed closure will have a major detrimental effect on a significant proportion of the over 2,000 pensioners in Nairn, disabled or vulnerable people and residents without access to a car.
Elderly people face a difficult or an unsafe journey to pay bills and withdraw their pension. Older people may not be able to pay bills on time and their safety may be at risk.
Age Concern states that 99 per cent of older people it questioned in rural areas consider their local post office to be "one-stop-shop lifeline".
Age Concern found that 56 per cent fear post office closures would leave them more isolated from society.
The majority of Nairn Harbour Street Post Office customers walk to the Post Office. This would mean customers having to drive or catch a bus to get access to Post Office services. This would result in a big increase in the number of road miles.
Future Considerations
The population of Nairn is forecast to grow to nearly 13,000 by 2024 (Highland Council Area Population projections May 2006).
Nairn is due to expand to the East and West. There are 443 new houses proposed for Nairn by 2011. 550 more houses are proposed for Nairn from 2011 to 2016 (Highland Council - A96 Growth Study).
